His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum became the Ruler of Dubai on 4 January 2006, following the death of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. On 5 January 2006, the members of the UAE Supreme Council elected His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid as the UAE’s Vice President. UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan nominated Sheikh Mohammed as the UAE Prime Minister; and the Supreme Council approved this nomination.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and the members of his Cabinet took their oaths in front of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed at Al Bateen Palace in Abu Dhabi on February 11, 2006.
Since becoming the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid has overseen the rolling out of revolutionary initiatives in the UAE.
The year 2007 witnessed unique achievements for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid both locally and regionally. On April 17, 2007, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed unveiled the UAE Government Strategy Plan with the aim of achieving sustainable development throughout the country, investing federal resources more efficiently and ensuring due diligence, accountability and transparency across federal bodies.
Regionally, his most outstanding achievement was the launch of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, on 19 May 2007, with an endowment of $10 billion. The Foundation aimed at promoting human development by investing in education and building knowledge capacity in the region to cultivate future leaders in both the public and private sectors. The Foundation promotes scientific research, and works towards spreading knowledge, encouraging business leadership, empowering youth, renewing the concept of culture, preserving heritage and promoting platforms of understanding among various cultures.
Earlier, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed became the Head of Dubai Police and Public Security on 1 November 1968. He has been the Minister of Defence since December 1971.
