His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah was born on September 25, 1948. After graduating from Al Sabahiya Elementary School in Fujairah, H.H. joined London College in the United Kingdom in 1967 to pursue his higher education, then joined Mons Military College in Aldershot, which is currently part of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. His Highness served as the Chief of Police and Security in Fujairah, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the verry first Cabinet of the federal government of the Union, and Crown Prince of Fujairah.
In 1974, His Highness Sheikh Hamad became Ruler of the emirate of Fujairah, succeeding his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Sharqi. The young Ruler demonstrated an unshaken commitment to completing the work started by his late father, developing and advancing the emirate of Al Fujairah in all sectors until it became a world-class destination for investors, businesses, and tourists.
Fujairah’s economy was booming in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century. In 1987, His Highness Sheikh Hamad issued an Emiri Decree establishing the Fujairah Free Zone, an independent government entity, to enhance the economy of the emirate, attract foreign investments, and contribute to increasing the emirate’s GDP. In April 2011, H. H. also issued an Emiri Decree establishing the Fujairah Petroleum Industries Zone (Foiz), which enhanced maritime trade, and oil and gas industries. This subsequently supported the creation of many logistical firms related to petroleum industries, and the Fujairah Port was ranked 2nd globally among the largest ports in supplying ships with fuel.
The ruler of Fujairah also revolutionised other sectors of the emirate such as tourism. He established tourism offices and government institutions that enhanced Fujairah’s global position as a unique tourism destination and contributed to the growth of the emirate’s economy.
H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi has always demonstrated an immense interest in developing the education sector. He has been closely following up on the educational process in schools in Fujairah. Besides, H. H. was keen to grow the local literary and cultural scene, to consolidate the presence of the emirate of Fujairah in the Arab world and globally. Therefore, in 1990, H. H. Sheikh Hamad gave his directives to establish the Fujairah Social and Cultural Association, becoming a cultural edifice promoting literary and intellectual scene through various events.
In December 2006, H.H. issued an Emiri Decree founding the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority which contributed to accelerating the achievement of the goals of the comprehensive media and cultural vision of the emirate of Fujairah. H. H. also founded Fujairah Theatre in 2005, a stage for many unforgettable theatre performances by artists from the UAE, GCC, and the Arab world.
